Crisp Regional Hospital teams up with the American Red Cross T Our community owes a debt of gratitude to everyone here who gives blood. The importance of blood donation cannot be stressed enough because we must maintain a constant, available supply for our patients and volunteer donors are our only source. A healthy person can give blood as often as six times a year and all we ask is that eligible donors give two or three times in a twelve-month period. Every donation really can save another life. Blood donations have three major components, which can be transfused to three different patients. Red blood cells, platelets and plasma make up a unit or pint of whole blood. Red blood cells help accident victims, surgery patients and people with anemia. Platelets help the blood clot and are needed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Plasma is used to treat patients suffering from burns or shock. People may be tired of hearing another plea for more blood donors because it happens so frequently, but the reality is that critically needed blood components are transfused every day and the supply does run out. This means we are constantly in need of more blood and more donations. Hospital officials are urging blood donors in the community to make it a priority to give blood as soon as possible. The American Red Cross needs 1200 people to give blood every weekday in order to have enough to meet patient needs in Georgia. For more information and to find out how to make a donation appointment, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or visit www.givebloodredcross.org. Blood donors must be age 17 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds. Details on the next blood drive are listed below:
